Debt - where to go when you need help

Usually when we are in financial trouble, we try and keep that information to ourselves. Whether you’ve just moved out on your own and want financial independence from your parents, or you’ve spent too much on a house and your vehicles and you can’t make the payments, or your credit cards are maxed out and you can only make the minimum payments, it’s usually your big secret. Unfortunately, many people will find that they can’t do something about their debt until they open up about it.

The first step to getting help for you debt is admitting to yourself that things are getting out of hand. After that, you need to seek help from professionals. You can do this in a variety of ways.

One of the most logical and comfortable places you can go to find help for debt problems is your financial institution. Lenders and banks also offer debt help and when you’ve gotten yourself into financial trouble, it’s best to go to the source of the problem. You don’t need to hide your financial troubles from your lender. They will be able to work with you to get things solved early on, since they don’t want to have to take legal action against you later. Likely they will suspend your payments for a short time to help you get back on your feet, reduce your payments, or restructure your loan.

If you’re debt problem is not at a bank, but with a credit card company the same principle applies. Many credit card companies will be willing to work with borrowers who are proactive to help them reduce their debt.

You can also access debt help over the Internet of from independent financial institutions that offer debt management or debt consolidation programs. These can be helpful. Either you make one monthly payment to the company that will in turn pay all of your creditors or you consolidate your debt into one loan and make only one monthly payment on that.

One thing definitely to watch out for is debt help scams. Always read the fine print and know what is on the line for you and what the company stands to gain from your business. Look into the company’s history and reputation before you proceed. And, be aware that just because an organization labels itself as “non-profit” does not indicate that it is there to help you.

Another option for you is to tackle your debt your own way. Many companies offer debt help services that you can do on your own. For instance, you can call your creditors or lenders and try and reduce your payments or get a lower interest rate. Or, you can become more responsible at managing your budget and make extra payments to your lenders. If you can cut costs or increase your income, you will be able to pay down your debt faster and save money.
